Chinese Portrait Photos Movie Info From acclaimed director Wang Xiaoshuai (BEIJING BICYCLE; SO LONG, MY SON) comes a personal snapshot of contemporary China in all its diversity. Shot over the course of ten years on both film and video, the film consists of a series of carefully composed tableaus of people and environments, each one more extraordinary than the last. Pedestrians shuffle across a bustling Beijing street, steelworkers linger outside a deserted factory, tourists laugh and scamper across a crowded beach, worshipers kneel to pray in a remote village. With a painterly eye for composition, Wang captures China as he sees it, calling to a temporary halt a land in a constant state of change. This may sound weird but there is something about your accent that makes it more relaxing. This exhibition is a small selection of photographs from the certificates of registration. These were issued by the Collector of Customs in Dunedin, and allowed Chinese and other alien residents to re-enter New Zealand, if leaving temporarily. The Chinese Immigrants Act 1881 and the Immigration Restriction Act 1899 and its amendments, set out details of requirements to be met by aliens entering New Zealand. Permits were generally needed and, for this reason, aliens living in this country and departing overseas temporarily, needed certificates of registration to ensure that they would be permitted to re-enter New Zealand. These certificates of registration were issued by the Collector of Customs in Dunedin. They were issued in duplicate, with one copy given to the alien and one retained by the Collector. Upon return (not necessarily to the same port), the certificate was presented to Customs officials, and once positively identified, the alien was allowed to enter. The surrendered certificate was then forwarded to the Collector of Customs who had issued it, where it was subsequently filed with his copy. For Chinese, the certificates also exempted them from paying the poll tax required under the Chinese Immigrants Act 1881, provided they had paid it on their first entry. The certificates generally show the following details - port and date of issue of certificate, name of alien and place of residence, identification particulars such as the place and date of birth, physical features, arrival details, and a photograph. Some of the earlier certificates also required fingerprints. Some of the certificates also have attached the initial application, or correspondence regarding the individual concerned. WOW your something else Omar 😂.
| Scout Tafoya December 13, 2019 Wang Xiaoshuai ’s latest movie works so splendidly on its own self-contained and easily divined terms you could watch it without knowing anything about the Shanghai-born director and still walk out stunned. Of course, the payoff of this work is all the richer if you know the course the director took from studio misfit beleaguered by distribution and self-esteem problems to well-liked and promising director of "Beijing Bicycle"—the kind of neo-Neo-realism international film festivals still love—to wave-riding miserablist director of scoring studies of casualties of China’s cultural revolution. He leaned more heavily on a depressive longing and woozy inevitability than did, say Jia Zhangke, to name one of the better known directors from the period known as China’s Sixth Generation. Life haunts the characters in his movies, who only realize what they’ve had to live with when looking back at who they were. His characters watch from the outside as tides wash over their existences, precious things are stolen, glories forgotten, potentials smothered. His two latest seem to share nothing but Wang’s sharp eye and melancholy form, but they’re instructive about the kind of cinema with which he’s wrestled all his life. Advertisement Wang’s latest is the gargantuan Golden Bear-winning family drama "So Long, My Son, " which follows two families for 30 years, charting the aftermath of the cultural revolution and the period in which Wang began making his own art. "Chinese Portrait" is like the minimalist B-side to that monumental work and it’s disarmingly simple in its methodology, one suspects because to film people simply, one must have been quite the reprieve for the dogged social realist. To spill the blood and mine the tears of forgotten men in a country grey with industry, where no life matters beyond the labor it can provide, is a burden even as it gives an artist the world. "Chinese Portrait" spends time with the real people his movies were based on in the places they’re rarely seen. He pulls out the incident and characters that color his cinema and places them back in the context from which he plucked them, deconstructing his world like he were spreading the parts of a car on a garage floor. "Chinese Portrait" is comprised of about 60 non-fiction vignettes. In many of them there are groups of people who remain stationary and some who look directly to camera, letting the audience know that the scene isn’t exactly purely objective. In other words Wang had to pose them, at least to an extent. The business that goes on around the lone "subjects" still feels spontaneous, like he had an agreement with just a couple of people and assured the rest of the people in frame that they could ignore the camera. Some of them do feel like traditional portraits brought to life, like the group of children standing with their minder in front of a remote village, neither moving nor smiling, as if waiting for a single picture to be taken. They’re all rewarding, in compositional terms, as the errant components flutter past the steadiness of his fixed figures and the somber backdrops. Critic Michael Sicinski has already pointed out Wang’s debt to documentarians James Benning, Peter Hutton and Nikolaus Geyrhalter, building on his pronounced affection for Andrei Tarkovsky to an anxious study of momentum and stasis as the essential tension of the people he’s filming. The new reference points help him suggest in blocking and framing what it costs us to stop being productive. In essence it’s the refusal of the action around the people staring at the camera that is the one constant. Everything else changes, from the cameras he uses to the year (it was shot over a decade). Even the most desolate of villages and workplaces display progress, whether in the form of men tending great yawning furnaces in factories or men dotting the corners of the frame like ants going about their business. One of the few compositions with no active participants shows people walking in the bottom third of the screen on a muddy path. Behind them in the middle third are old cars, a crumbling series of houses, and an excavator digging up the earth to make room for new developments, represented by the stark and unappealing apartment complexes in the top third. The film can, in just a few seconds, tell you everything you need to know about the China Wang sees; a mud-slicked construction site where promise is perpetual and no one ever just gets to live. This documentary is in many ways a self-portrait as well as a look outward. Wang himself appears on camera a few times, including on a train looking at the camera, a cigarette in his hand, his homeland flying by out the open window behind him. His movies have always been about the way progress and constant "revolution" makes his characters feel small and out of place. Here he shows himself in their stead, trying to pay tribute to the place and the people who, like him, are dwarfed by the towering currents and endless drive. Even when he sets foot outside the populous towns and cities and finds horses in a field, they’re biting each other’s fur in a funny embrace, scratching an itch they can’t get to. The few minutes Wang captured are of people ignoring the motion all around them seem radical in the face of the dehumanizing effect of progress, the bane of his cinema’s existence. Staring at a camera, confronting us in the audience, asking us wonder what if anything is normal about life in a modern civilization constantly dredging up and rebuilding itself. Where does the self fit into the endless momentum? Wang asks us to construct the inner lives of the students staring at us while their classmates do their work, the men stitching fishing nets on the dock, the man in the hardhat with his back to the construction vehicle making more buildings to accommodate more people. As Wang’s China grows past predictions about its growth and government, as each corner of the country becomes impossible to film without the drapery of moving bodies and their shadows, what becomes of everyone’s identity? My personal favorite of all of the many compositions here is the first, in which nine men in drab uniforms and miners’ helmets lean and crouch around a length of track bisecting the frame. Some of their faces are hard to make out thanks to the shadow of the mine itself or because they’re a little too far from the camera, but the way they stand is telling about their outlooks, the way they’re used to their jobs. Suddenly a length of cable starts moving and it becomes clear they’re watching as something is being pulled up from the mine out into the light. There’s no little suspense generated by the anticipation. What’s coming up from inside the earth? Probably nothing exciting, but the speed increases and these men just stand there watching. Just when it feels like the payload has to enter the frame, there’s a few small light leaks in the film and then it cuts. The reward for their efforts is unknowable to us, and suddenly their nonchalant stances seem political. Their rewards for their efforts are unknown to them, too, as this work will manifest nothing else but more work. "Chinese Portrait" is a stunning work of photography and a simple work of empathy that asks, "How much goes into making sure we all get to just live? " The world, our lives, will get away from us, this is almost certain. Stopping and simply staring at your surroundings, dreaming the interior lives of the people we pass, imagining the hard labor that went into sculpting every place we stand, it may seem like a small thing. But today it’s one of the only things that seems truly revolutionary. Reveal Comments comments powered by.

Share Passengers on a train, tourists at the beach, factory workers, farmers, construction workers and students: in a series of portraits, the famous Chinese independent film director Wang Xiaoshuai ( Frozen, Beijing Bicycle, 11 Flowers) captures the state of his nation. Each portrait is a carefully composed long shot, using a static camera that captures one or more people in motionless poses. But there's always movement somewhere in the frame: not all the subjects remain still, and animals, passersby and children don't obey the protocol. The resulting scenes are fascinating, moving photographs in which there's always something more to discover. The director shows us a modern China that's a rich mix of new buildings and old courtyards, derelict industrial sites, countryside and big cities. What's most striking here is the seemingly endless amount of construction projects. This film is a motionless, non-narrative snapshot that calls a temporary halt to all this inexorable change. The episodes were written by Sandy Welch, writer of previous BBC costume dramas Jane Eyre and North & South, and directed by Jim O'Hanlon. The serial stars Romola Garai as the titular heroine Emma Woodhouse, Jonny Lee Miller as her loyal lifelong friend Mr. Knightley, and Michael Gambon as Emma's father, Mr. Woodhouse. The serial originally ran weekly on Sunday nights on BBC One from 4 to 25 October 2009. [1] Plot [ edit] For a detailed account of the plot, see main article: Emma (novel) Austen's classic comic novel follows the story of the "handsome, clever and rich" Emma Woodhouse. Dominating the small provincial world of Highbury, Emma believes she is a skilled matchmaker and repeatedly attempts to pair up her friends and acquaintances. Nothing delights her more than meddling in the love lives of others. But when she takes protégée Harriet Smith under her wing, her interference has a detrimental effect. Brought up sharply against the folly of her own immaturity, the consequent crisis and her bitter regrets are brought to a happy resolution in a comedy of self-deceit and self-discovery. Cast and characters [ edit] Main [ edit] Romola Garai as Emma Woodhouse: In Austen's opening lines of the novel: "Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her. " Emma has no need to marry, being head of her own household, and having plenty of money, but she delights in matchmaking those around her — and credits herself with being very good at it - despite Mr Knightley's scepticism. Jonny Lee Miller as Mr. George Knightley: Mr Knightley is Emma's only social and intellectual equal in Highbury, living at Donwell Abbey, a rambling country estate a short walk from Hartfield. He has known Emma since she was a baby, and there's an easy familiarity between them. He is an individual, quick-witted, with a dry sense of humour — often used in sparring with Emma. But he also has a strong moral compass — and at times he strongly disagrees with Emma over her behaviour. Michael Gambon as Mr. Woodhouse: Mr Woodhouse is described by Austen as a valetudinarian — old before his time. He lost his wife when his two daughters were very young, and has developed an extremely nervous disposition. He is a loving and kind father, but he worries constantly, especially about health. He hardly ever leaves Hartfield, and hates the thought of Emma ever leaving him. Louise Dylan as Harriet Smith: Harriet is a parlour boarder at Mrs Goddard's School. She has been sent there to be educated by her father, who remains anonymous, because Harriet is his "natural daughter" — i. e., she's illegitimate. Being a parlour boarder means that she has stayed on at the school to help out with the other girls. She's pretty, but in reality, she has little prospect of marrying a gentleman. Emma, however, is sure that Harriet's anonymous father must be a gentleman, and takes her under her wing. Jodhi May as Anne Taylor/Weston: Anne has been Emma's governess since her mother died when Emma was a baby. More like a sister than a governess, Anne is wise and caring, but devoted to Emma and perhaps a little indulgent. When she marries Mr Weston, she is worried about leaving Emma on her own at Hartfield. Robert Bathurst as Mr. Weston: Mr Weston is an eternal optimist, despite the fact that his life has not always run smoothly. He married young, to a woman who spent all his money, who was disowned by her family, and then died, leaving him with Frank, his two-year-old son. He agreed for Frank to be adopted by his wife's estranged sister, who insisted that he change his name to Frank Churchill. Frank has lived in the lap of luxury ever since. Rupert Evans as Frank Churchill: Frank is a ball of energy, charming, mischievous, and spoilt. He has been kept at his manipulative aunt's beck and call for most of his life, and often seems to be called back to her bedside whenever he ventures away — although it is never entirely clear whether this is just a convenient excuse for not visiting Highbury and his father. At his worst, he could be a rogue — and he seems to delight in gossiping about Jane Fairfax. Laura Pyper as Jane Fairfax: Jane's parents died when she was a toddler. Her aunt, Miss Bates, and grandmother Mrs Bates sent her from Highbury to live with the Campbells, who could offer greater advantages. Captain Campbell knew she would be a good companion for his only daughter, Miss Campbell. Ever since, Jane has excelled at everything a girl should, and Miss Bates has bored Emma rigid with Jane's virtues at every opportunity. Now Jane has reached the age where she must leave the Campbells and return to Highbury — but what is the real reason for her return? Tamsin Greig as Miss Bates: Miss Bates is the daughter of the former vicar of Highbury, who died many years ago. She has never married, and now never will. Without a husband to provide an income, she faces ever-increasing poverty. Despite her woes, Miss Bates has a perennially cheerful disposition. She fills any silence with incessant talk. Valerie Lilley as Mrs. Bates: Where Miss Bates talks non stop, her aged mother, Mrs Bates, never speaks. She sits quietly in the corner of the room, or is wheeled from place to place by Miss Bates, revealing very little of what she really thinks of their situation. Blake Ritson as Mr. Elton: Mr Elton is the vicar of Highbury. In the early 19th century, the post of vicar could be given, inherited, or bought, and conferred a certain social status as well as an annual income. Mr Elton is a dashing young man, aware of his status in the village, and his eligibility. He's charming — perhaps, at times, a little too charming. Christina Cole as Augusta Elton: Mrs Elton is rich, and a good catch for Mr Elton in many ways. But she's also vulgar and interfering, and one-upmanship is second nature to her. She arrives in Highbury keen to prove her social standing, and immediately puts Emma's nose out of joint. Recurring [ edit] Dan Fredenburgh as John Knightley Poppy Miller as Isabella Knightley Jefferson Hall as Robert Martin Veronica Roberts as Mrs Goddard Liza Sadovy as Mrs Cole Eileen O'Higgins as Miss Martin 1 Sarah Ovens as Miss Martin 2 Susie Trayling as Mrs Churchill Frank Doody as Mr Dixon Amy Loughton as Miss Campbell / Mrs Dixon Production [ edit] Principal photography commenced with a four-day shoot in the Kent village of Chilham from 14 to 18 April 2009. Production design staff covered several roads with gravel to disguise the 21st-century road markings, and erected a fountain in the village square. [2] Filming occurred from 8 a. m. to 7 p. every day and was scheduled to coincide with the Easter school holiday to minimise local disruption. [3] Filming continued at the parish church of St Mary the Virgin in Send, Surrey on 24 and 28 April, where scenes of a wedding and a Sunday service were completed. [4] Further filming took place at Squerryes Court, Westerham, Kent where many interior scenes were shot. [5] The scene that shows Emma and Harriet Smith on their way to visit the poor was filmed in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England. The church they pass along the wooded path is St Etheldreda's Church, Hatfield. Episodes [ edit] Critical reception [ edit] Reviewing the first episode, Sam Wollaston of The Guardian called it "very good... even if it's not necessary", wishing the BBC would adapt some lesser-known novels rather than churning out the same adaptations again and again. He nevertheless praised the acting, suggesting Garai's "eyes alone deserve a BAFTA" and that Michael Gambon made "a splendid old Mr. Woodhouse". [9] John Preston of The Telegraph also noted Romola Garai as "particularly good" in the titular role, and noted that while Jim O Hanlon's direction was perhaps a little too "steady and sure" there was still "plenty of sprightliness there too". [10] After the third episode of the series, however, he wrote that "[it] was a disaster, becoming ever more coarse and clumsy as it went on. The narration was obtrusive, the charm next to non-existent and the secondary characters insufficiently delineated. " Emma he deemed "too bovine, too cocksure" in order for her to be truly in doubt. He did not find that Jonny Lee Miller, "who could have been a first-class Mr Knightley, was given enough screen time to make an impact". He concluded: "Contrivance ha[d] taken over. Sprightliness ha[d] disappeared. The soufflé ha[d] fallen. " [11] Tom Sutcliffe of The Independent wrote in a review that "the primary-colour brightness seems to have carried over into some the performances. " He found that Garai "[did]n't capture the sense of frustrated intelligence that makes Emma bearable on the page", but blamed the script for it. He also saw a casting problem with Emma and Knightley in the sense that Miller "still carrie[d] too much of the seductive bad boy about him" so that he was not convincing as a "surprising love object", and "that threatens one of the novel's great achievements, which is to educate us alongside its heroine. " [12] Some critics also noted the dip in ratings following the first episode. In The Independent, Jonathon Brown observed that while "the critics have given it a qualified nod of approval" the second installment of the serial "pulled in only 3. 5 million viewers – down nearly 1 million on the opening episode the previous week – while the third episode saw another 200, 000 switch off". He suggests this may be due to the "13 million-strong audience from ITV1 's all-conquering X Factor " which had launched a Sunday night results show for the first time, or that "the days of bonnet and bustle are [simply] over". Geralt just became more and more cynical and sulky due to his social position and the way the world is treating him and his work (just like basically any other witcher in the books/games. And Geralt is a noble, was made a knight of Lyria by Queen Meeve (where he decided to take the name Of Rivia.

She had proved all her talent in When a man loves a woman or The Doors, but none can make a romantic comedy so good as she can. Harry and Sally is already a classic movie.

@wewewill: this has to be sinatra. (but harry connick, jr, also sings it nicely. It’s a fact! Ten of them, in fact. All about the comedians from Canada who created the strangest sketch show since that famous flying circus. Scott Thompson, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, Dave Foley, and Bruce McCulloch. After launching the pilot episode on both CBC and HBO in 1988, The Kids in the Hall —which made its series debut a year later—brought an irreverent, chaotic brand of comedy to the airwaves as a kind of antidote to Saturday Night Live 's pop culture-heavy format. The series contorted and skewered real life, stretching satire to its furthest limits with recurring characters like the chauvinistic Cabbage Head, the explosive Chicken Lady, and others that weren’t human-animal/vegetable hybrids. And it's about to make a comeback! Twenty-five years after airing its final episode, Variety reports that a revival of The Kids in the Hall will be coming to Amazon as its first original Canadian series. Though no release date has been announced for the revival, let’s crush our heads together for some facts about the purveyors of brain candy. 1. The Kids in the Hall adopted their name from a Sid Caesar gag. Whenever Sid Caesar bombed a joke, he’d say that it had been written by “the kids in the hall, ” referring to the young upstarts working for him in the NBC studio of Your Show of Shows. Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald were big Caesar fans, but they didn’t choose the name solely because of that admiration. The “kids” Caesar was goofing on in the 1950s included Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, and others who the new “Kids” also loved. 2. The Kids in the Hall avoided conversations about the nature of comedy. There’s a cottage industry of comedians waxing comically about being funny (think Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee), and it makes sense to assume funny people are always discussing what makes things funny. Yet The Kids in the Hall shied away from navel gazing. “There was always a pooh-poohing of theoretical discussions, ” Mark McKinney told Vulture. McCulloch added that “whenever we’d have a theoretical conversation about comedy, we’d stop because we knew if we kept at it, we’d break up. " 3. The "head crusher" made his debut much earlier than The Kids in the Hall series. One of The Kids in the Hall's most famous characters was the Head Crusher, in which McKinney played a delusional (or was he? ) man who tried to crush people’s heads by squinting through his thumb and forefinger. It turns out that he’s been a champion against yuppiedom since the beginning. “It was something that I created back in our club days, ” McKinney told Esquire. “Kevin and I were having lunch, and we were broke. I think we were splitting a sandwich. We were feeling really poor, and we were having lunch in an area of Toronto called Bay Street which is kind of like Wall Street, so there were a lot of people in very expensive suits all around us talking loud, and I just started crushing their heads, like, ‘You think you so good? I crush your head! ’ And we immediately thought it was funny. " 4. It was a The Kids in the Hall fan who gave them cow eyes. The Kids in the Hall attracted a curious fanbase, including one fan in Vancouver who gave them a jar of cow eyes. But it wasn’t just a gift: He put them out on a plate and asked the Kids to chow down. “We didn’t eat that, ” McDonald told The A. V. Club. 5. Saturday Night Live almost broke The Kids in the Hall up before they even got going. McDonald and Dave Foley were performing as The Kids in the Hall before the group formed into the Voltron of cross-dressing comedy we know. Likewise, McCulloch and McKinney were working together in the improv world. They met and started doing comedy together as The Kids in the Hall, eventually pulling in Thompson in 1985, but that was around the same time that Saturday Night Live came calling for McCulloch and McKinney. They wrote for the iconic show for only a season, necessitating a brief hiatus from the Kids, and when they got back together, it was SNL guru Lorne Michaels who saw their act and set the gears in motion for The Kids in the Hall TV show. 6. The Kids in the Hall made only one (super divisive) movie together. Many TV comedies have tried to make the jump to feature films by trying to make their humor appeal to an even larger audience. That’s not what The Kids in the Hall did. They actually went even weirder when they made 1996’s Brain Candy, a film about a struggling pharmaceutical company that hits on a potent antidepressant which becomes a massive success (except when it drives people into comas where they relive their favorite memories on loop). It featured several characters from their show alongside many new ones, and was so divisive that Siskel and Ebert all but yelled at each other while reviewing it (Siskel loved it; Ebert... not so much). 7. Brain Candy was made under incredibly depressing circumstances. A cult film through and through (read: a box office flop), Brain Candy also represented the end of the road for The Kids in the Hall. It came after their TV show was over, and when the group's members were forging their own paths. Foley, who’d found mainstream success with NewsRadio, left the group over creative differences, and lost his writing credit and his main role in Brain Candy. It was a strain on a group that was already buckling, but they were also dealing with a lot of personal problems. “In the period of a month, Dave’s marriage broke up, one of Kevin’s parents died, and my brother committed suicide, ” Thompson later explained. “I was pretty much in shock. My brother died literally a week before we started shooting. All those things conspired to make it a dark time. ” Not to mention they were making a comedy about depression. 8. The Kids in the Hall stand by their most controversial gag. One Kids in the Hall character who made the leap to their movie also ruffled a lot of feathers for those who couldn’t tell where the satirical line had been drawn. Cancer Boy was meant to mock celebrities who sought the spotlight with sick children, but a lot of people thought it was a bad taste jab aimed at the kids. The studio desperately wanted the character cut, and Janet Maslin of The New York Times called it the film’s “worst idea, ” but the Kids defend it to this day. “I love Cancer Boy more than anybody, ” McCulloch, who portrayed the character, told The A. Club. “I was tired of the way that little kids with cancer were used by celebrities for photo ops. If the kid goes into remission, does Wayne Gretzky still visit him? ” The other cast members echoed that support for the controversial joke. 9. “Girl Drink Drunk” had an unhappy origin. In another famous sketch, Foley plays a “grown man” corporate climber peer pressured into having alcohol for the first time. Eventually, the drinks that “taste like candy” ruin his life, hilariously. For McDonald, the idea for the gag came from a ruinous performance when McCulloch bombed throughout a show and then scolded the group, which depressed McDonald to hit a bar with McKinney. The winos at the bar depressed him more, and McKinney convinced him to have his very first drink, a margarita, because “it takes just like candy. " 10. The Kids in the Hall reformed to make a murder mystery. The dissolution of the group after Brain Candy wasn’t the end for The Kids in the Hall. They’ve reunited a few times in the past two decades for live tours, but The Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town was their first time returning to television, and the result is something tonally similar to their sketch show while structurally divergent. It follows a single story—the murder of the mayor of a small town vying to host the 2028 Summer Olympics. Oh, and the scythe-wielding personification of Death has checked into a local motel. It’s still profoundly goofy and seriously silly—and bodes well for their Amazon revival series.

Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2018 Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase As everyone knows, who has seen the original movie, there is a very famous scene in the diner where Meg Ryan (Sally) demonstrates how to fake an orgasm. That scene made history and was hilarious. In this version of the movie, they cut that scene. We are very displeased and are returning the movie and will look for an original. Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2018 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase I love this movie, but this digital version of it is disappointing. It is poorly dubbed, so sometimes the dialogue is slightly out of sync with the actors' mouths, and I also believe this may be missing the scene when Harry tells Sally that he always reads the end of the book first, in case he dies before he finishes it. That's kind of integral to his character, so I don't know what happened to that scene in this digital version. Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2018 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase As another reviewer mentioned, this version cuts out the cafe scene where Meg Ryan fakes an orgasm. Super disappointed... now I’m just watching the rest of the movie to see what else was edited out. Seriously? I'm no expert on edge enhancement but details look natural. Blu Ray com's review would have mentioned any problems in that area. Amazon really needs to get their act together on reviews here (and not just here; this is a pervasive problem) where reviews for ALL SORTS of releases over the years are conglomerated here *together*, some even showing as verified purchases but again these are for earlier editions of the film, some of which my well have cut scenes etc. for all I know but this 30th anniversary Shout release is just fine. This resumes adds 44 minutes of a new extra, and carried over are several previous extras from earlier releases. My wife turned me onto this. I liked it so much when we were dating that we recorded all the older married couples we know talking about how they met and fell in love and played it as a montage at our wedding, just like the clips they use to bookend the scenes in this movie. I just connect with this movie because my wife takes 20 minutes to order a sandwich. And that's the magic of this story, is that Harry and Sally do at least 15 things that everyone can personally relate to. In the end it's just a sweet story about two friends who really love each other on a deep emotional level. It just take them 15 years to realize it. It's well acted. It's a good story. It highlights the differences between men and women perfectly. It's just a great movie to watch with someone you love. And the Pictionary scene makes me laugh so hard my sides hurt every single time. The entire movie it really funny. But it's also sweet. This is considered to be THE romantic comedy for a reason. It's the best one. Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2017 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase One of my favorites. Today's romantic comedies are full of lazy writing and one dimensional roles that are more like caricatures, with the "goofy", lovable, light hearted guy and uptight, unlikable woman. Yawn. These two characters are likable and you see them evolve, as individuals and within the context of their relationship. Wonderfully written and portrayed. I love this movie. Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2016 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase Love doesn't come in a minute, Sometimes it doesn't come at all I only know that when I'm in it It isn't silly, no, it isn't silly, love isn't silly at all. These words, from Paul McCartney's 'Silly Love Songs', seem to me to be a very accurate description of the theme of 'When Harry Met Sally'. This iconic romantic comedy, written by Nora Ephron, is, for me, one of the most insightful comments on the place of love in the post-60s world. It charts the way that acquaintance can turn into friendship and then into love. Harry (Billy Crystal) encounters Sally (Meg Ryan) on a long car journey during which they both seem to decide that the other is obnoxious in one way or another. Their path to love is funny, totally engaging and ultimately unforgettable. One of the greatest - no THE greatest - characteristic of the cinema is its ability to access our deepest emotions. How many times do we weep cathartically in our normal lives - most of us, not many. Yet there are dozens of films that induce just this kind of reaction. How many times do we laugh so much that we ache - very rarely outside a cinema, but often within. How many times are we so scared that we cannot move - almost never in life, but often in the cinema. And these emotions cannot be accessed in the same way through any other art. And there are laughs and tears galore in 'When Harry Met Sally'. Why? Because we really *care* for these kooky characters, and the love that they find has a kind of purity that our loves struggle to emulate. For some people (and I feel sorry for them) films that induce a warm feeling of pleasure are sentimental and worthless. They should avoid this film as it might undermine their sterile cynicism. But if you trust your emotions and regard them as your greatest asset, 'When Harry Met Sally' will be one of the most worthwhile films of the modern era. Top international reviews 5. 0 out of 5 stars Top Classic of the romantic comedy genre Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 24, 2018 Verified Purchase Iconic in so many ways and will remain a classic of the genre. Many spin offs, imitators and rivals in the genre, some even quite good too ('Sleepless in Seatle') but none really come close. Why? Credible, witty dialogue, meandering intelligently, with lots of good supporting roles, rich in classic moments (the coffee shop fake-orgasm is only the most spectacularly memorable) and some classic one liners ('When you finally realise you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible'). The narrative technique of 'intermissions' with various couples explaining all the different ways they each fell in love: I can imagine so many ways that could have gone wrong or been over sentimentalised but it worked well; I found it touching. This one is for the family library. Nothing explicit but it is a 15 for how suggestive and frank it is. Loved every moment, and occasionally need a refill! 3 people found this helpful Sending feedback... Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. But what if Larry Ellison produced it, Gary Ross directed and starred in it, the actress who plays Carolyn in A Place To Call Home costars, Debra Zane casts it, and I write it? The bells would ring like my 9 kroner network coming alive. It's Gary as Harry and 'Carolyn' as Sally back in1989 as the only members of a bookclub. There are three acts each ending with them: First paired in separate beds critiqueing Moby Dick with the punchline 'You're telling me that he would rather be whaling then catching a little tale at home? ' Then at Barnes&Noble she overpowers him and lays a big one on him to coup the only copy of 'Marriage for Dummies'. Lastly at a stylish café in Florence they celebrate with coffee and cake as honeymooners just finishing their copies of 'In The Name of the Rose'. Walking arm in arm as friends and spouses they walk off into the sunset. With that much talent it's bound to make money. P. S. I'm issuing a Restraining Order preventing Akiva from within a 50-mile radius of this show. If he defies this order, he will be sentenced to the worst punishment I can imagine: psyche jail. Only Denmark has a place big enough for his ego. I'm not sure what it is but I've seen it! I think he's missed his calling: He should have been a hacker instead. I'm not a guy. One person found this helpful Understated brilliance Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 28, 2013 Verified Purchase This in many ways can be seen a a throwback to a time when attention spans were longer than an advert and people enjoyed communication without a keyboard (yes I note the irony here). The development of the two main characters, one initially happlily naive and the other seemingly born cynical, seen through a number of events (some"small" some life changing) is wonderfully brought to life. This is not only through the excellent performances but also through the brilliantly written script, all set against a wonderfully directed "world". This film is a romance even if at times there are periods when it appears that this is not the case - this helps echo real 's not all chocolates and roses but when you finally realise you've met that someone special.... 2 people found this helpful I'll have what she's having. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 3, 2015 Verified Purchase For me this movie is a classic and I probably don't need to sell you on it. I suppose it should be a typical rom-com, except it has Billy Crystal in it which automatically makes it hilarious. You've also got Meg Ryan in her hey-day as her usual cute, girl next door type character. It is perfect example of a feel-good movie that can be watched over and over, and is endlessly quotable, even 26 years later. Like I said, I suppose it's a rom com but its one that men can enjoy too. Timeless classic Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 12, 2012 Verified Purchase OK - so you need a romantic streak to like this film, but the story of Sally and Harry - told over several years in their lives - is a must for an autumn afternoon, tucked up in front of the fire, cup of hot choccie, or glass of warming red wine, in hand. There are some hilarious scenes/lines. 'You made a woman miaow? '; the Mexican wave at the ballgame; Sally's diner "I'll have what she's having'; 'there's a guy checking you out in personal development' (the fantastic Carrie Fisher) and finally, the one that always has me reaching for the tissues, at the famous NY Eve party: 'I love that you get cold when it's seventy one degrees out, I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich, I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts, I love that after I spend a day with you I can still smell your perfume on my clothes and I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Years Eve. I came here tonight because when you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of the life to start as soon as possible. " Sniffle... Bargain buy indeed Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 21, 2014 Verified Purchase When I bought the three films DVD set, the only film I really knew was "Thelma & Louise" And since the package arrived I've seen that film twice in full, the other two movies I've just once. But if you want some excellent movies to watch on your DVD player these 3 movies are definitely worth watching. They're excellent movies! THE reference for American Romantic Comedies Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 31, 2013 Verified Purchase Even after watching it so many times, knowing it by heart, I still enjoy it and remain stuck in front of it. It's a reference as a movie, but also in real life: everyone's seen it at least once, most of the quotes are references and are self explanatory for they're bound to the movie. The story itself, spanning over 20 years, is full of clichés about relationships between men and women, as usual you know from the first minutes that these two, who keep on arguing, are going to end up together. This is not a spoil, the important is the path, not the end -- which is also only a beginning. Hence, it's not so surprising that it's a hard to find in second hand DVD shops: people keep this one as a base for their library. 1. 0 out of 5 stars Absolute rubbish Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 20, 2019 Verified Purchase Boring and seeming pointless. Why are the titles in the reverse direction. Years ago I wanted to do something special in proposing to my girlfriend. And I thought about this scene and how New Year's was coming up. So at about 10 pm on December 31st I suggested we watch this movie. And she happily agreed. Then after we did some food and getting comfortable preparations I started it at 10:20 -ish. Then a few minutes before midnight after Harry says that he wants to spend the rest of his life with her, I went down on one knee and proposed with a diamond ring. And yes, she said yes. We lived together after that, reality set in and it didn't work out, but we still remain good friends. She still frequently brings up my proposal and how it was one of her favorite moments of her life.

If you were going to compare it to the current Broadway musical, do not, it's like comparing apples and oranges. Both are magnificent but different in many ways. I'm a huge fan of Gene Kelly. His masculinity and spectacular tap dancing are complement so well with Leslie Caron's Classic ballet Point. His dance with the little French children "I've got rhythm" is an unforgettable simply joyful scene. Oscar Levant is dream made in heaven with his sardonic comic humor, and one of the most extraordinary concert pianists of that era. It is worth it just to see and hear him play. Pure magic for young and old. I would give it 10 stars if it were possible. Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2019 Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase I don't know what went wrong where, but this transfer is kind of a joke. Anyone who has seen a real dye transfer Technicolor print of this film will know what. The color is ugly here - it should be vibrant and beautiful. Nothing is as sharp as it should be. I wish Warner Archive would do this and Gigi over again, and perhaps On the Town while they're at it. The movie itself is mostly a wondrous thing. Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2018 Format: DVD Verified Purchase I saw this movie when it first came out in the 1950's, and have seen it several times since. It certainly hasn't lost its charm, and that's why I bought it. Almost everything in it is perfect - Gershwin's music, Gene Kelly's dancing and pretty good singing, and then there is the dancing and charm of a very young Leslie Caron, in what was, I believe, her first movie appearance. But, leaving the best 'til last, there is the dancing and splendor of the 'American in Paris' scene. I am no connoisseur of ballet, but I don't think one has to be to take in and enjoy both the magnificent setting and the music and dancing involved. If you like music, dancing, and real talent, you will not want to pass up this opportunity. Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2016 Format: DVD Verified Purchase I absolutely LOVE this movie. But this DVD has audio problems that make it unwatchable. The dialog is so quiet that you have to turn the volume up to 100% - and then when a song begins (and it's a musical, there's a song every few minutes! ) it's crashingly, painfully loud, so must turn audio down swiftly. It's incredibly distracting to watch a movie with your thumb constantly at the ready to hit the volume up / down. I'm guessing these DVDs were seconds / problematic at factory, and that's why it was so cheap. You sometimes really do get what you pay for. :( Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2016 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase I have always enjoyed musicals, whether movies or live stage productions. I'm totally enthralled once the singing and dancing begins. But, with the success of An American in Paris on Broadway, I had to revisit this old movie; I was a seven year old when I last saw. The dialogue and visuals might seem a little hokey by today's standards, but Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron's dancing is second to none. I loved the movie from beginning to end, and I do recommend this old gem to all who have an interest in amazing dance. A dynamic history of the making of the film, which reveals how George and Ira Gershwin's classic songs, the dazzling art of the French impressionists and the ultimate teamwork of MGM's legendary "Freed Unit" came together to create a musical masterpiece. Featuring ten new interviews, including co-stars Leslie Caron, Nina Foch, and Kelly's widow. A very enlightening piece; Caron's memories are probably the most interesting, with Foch running a close 2nd. Caron's comments about co-star Georges Guétary being handsome but not too bright seem to be echoed by Kelly's widow, who says Gene spent more time trying to teach him how to gracefully walk down a set of steps than on anything else in the film. It is unfortunate that Maurice Chevalier could not have taken that role as originally intended. You also realize just how revolutionary this movie was (artistically), especially because of the 17-minute ballet tacked on at the end of the movie. Even Irving Berlin disapproved during an on-set visit, which didn't help the confidence of Vincente Minnelli at all. Outtakes: Georges Guetary performing Love Walked In (not missed in the movie at all! ) Audio Outtakes: Alternate Main Title, But Not for Me (Guetary), But Not for Me (Levant Piano Solo), Gershwin Prelude #3, I've Got a Crush on You, Nice Work if You Can Get It, 'S Wonderful Radio Interviews: Johnny Green, Gene Kelly, Gene Kelly & Leslie Caron; Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron promotional radio interview with Dick Simmons Not all of the original musical recording stems have survived over the years, preventing a true stereo/5. 1 restoration of the soundtrack; instead, a restored mono version is being made available. Most are familiar with the movie; storywise, it is a little creaky and hasn't necessarily survived well over the years: Kelly is an American artist living in Paris. He falls in love with a young girl (Leslie Caron) who is in a loveless relationship with one of his best friends (Guétary). Kelly is also in somewhat of a loveless relationship with his financial sponsor (Nina Foch). You can probably guess the rest. The glowing color, fantastic music by Gershwin (arrangements by the talented Conrad Salinger), and the amazing choreography of Gene Kelly will keep this one a classic for years to come despite a predictable plot. Just the ending ballet alone is a masterpiece; the art of Toulouse Lautrec and Utrillo comes to life with Gene Kelly & Leslie Caron dancing their hearts out to some of the most imaginative choreography (Kelly's) in years. The Freed Unit at MGM was at their peak when this movie was made, and this is one of the last great ones that it created. It is a real shame that with how fantastic the picture is (the colors literally leap off the screen, and it really adds to the appreciation of what an artistically beautiful visual feast this movie is) that the sound cannot match. Although it is clear and free of problems, the Gershwin music just begs for a 5. 1 or 7. 1 surround track; unfortunately, due to the age and availability of the original elements, this is not possible. Top international reviews 5. 0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Watch for Those That Enjoy Musicals Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 30, 2015 Verified Purchase This was made in 1951, two years before I was born; this is the first time that I had seen it! It cost a fortune back then to make it - 2. 7 million dollars; they needn’t have worried, at the last count the studio had made 1. 3 billion! It won numerous gongs for its choreography and costume and direction. I felt that the lead players in the cast also deserved an Oscar, especially ‘perpetual motion, ’ Gene Kelly, and the charming Leslie Caron, whom I thought a total delight to look at and watch? Add Gershwin’s music into the mix and this just couldn’t fail. The direction by Vincente Minnelli (Liza’s dad) produced a superb spectacle. I bought the plain DVD version (not the Bluray) but I have to say that the picture quality and colour is just amazing for a film of that age. The final dance / ballet scenes are rather long at 16 minutes but it is a wonderful finale, apparently those scenes alone cost a half a million dollars to make! I thoroughly enjoyed the film and as the saying goes – they certainly don’t make um’ like that anymore? 3 people found this helpful Sending feedback... Thank you for your feedback. Gene Kelly served as the film's principal star, singer, athletically-exuberant dancer and energetic choreographer and he even directed the sequence surrounding "Embraceable You. " The entire film glorifies the joie de vivre of Paris, but it was shot on M-G-M's sound stages in California, except for a few opening, establishing shots of the scenic city. Nonetheless, it remains one of the most optimistic American films of the post-war period, with Paris at its centre. If you've heard of `An American in Paris, ' then you already know that it's one of the top musicals ever made and one of the artistic high points in the history of the M-G-M studio. In the production unit of Arthur Freed, M-G-M bankrolled a concentration of musical and dancing talent that no smaller organisation could possibly have put together; it's one of the truly persuasive arguments in favour of the old studio system. Inspired by the music of George and Ira Gershwin, Arthur Freed put his most creative talent into this one entertainment. The ambitious Vincente Minnelli was a meticulous design-oriented director, while the energetic star and choreographer Gene Kelly was hooked on the idea of blending dance and cinema into new, unseen forms. One of the film's highlights is its impressive finale - an ambitious, colourful, imaginative, 13 minute avant-garde "dream ballet" costing a half million dollars to produce. The pretentious sequence, featuring an Impressionistic period daydream in the style of various painters, is one of the longest uninterrupted dance sequences of any Hollywood film, and features the music of George Gershwin. Gene Kelly and John Alton collaborated in presenting a totally remarkable marathon musical and dance number that was the first for both of them to work in Technicolor. Hollywood attempts at artistic achievement have often been met with indifference, even when they succeed. Film historians point to the "cinematic" ballet in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's `The Red Shoes' as an important precedent; many dance critics had little use for it as well. Hollywood films were expected to be escapism first and art "maybe;" Vincente Minnelli and Arthur Freed took a big risk with their consciously "arty" ballet finale. That America accepted and celebrated `An American in Paris' perhaps marks the highpoint of post-war optimism, a time just before the anxieties of those years claimed a big piece of the culture. Alan Jay Lerner's script is as simple as any of M-G-M's formula musicals. Ex-GI Jerry Mulligan [Gene Kelly] tries to become a painter in an idealised post-war Paris that still loves Americans. He lives in the same building as Adam Cook [Oscar Levant], a pianist-slacker who lives from fellowship to fellowship grant. Mulligan meets two women on the same day. Well-heeled Baltimore divorcée Milo Roberts [Nina Foch] offers to sponsor Jerry's art, but is really looking for a new man to keep. Jerry's eye instead goes to the young Parisian Lise Bouvier [Leslie Caron]. He falls in love almost immediately. The problem is that Lise is engaged to successful singer Henri Baurel [Georges Guétary], a close associate of Adam. Jerry Mulligan's Yankee sense of humour helps win Lise's heart, but she feels too indebted to Henri to let him down. A strong story is often irrelevant to a classic M-G-M musical. The important factors are the music, the talent and the treatment of the musical numbers. Paris glides from one jubilant George Gershwin winner to the next, none of which repeat a mood. Jerry, Adam and Henri celebrate friendship with "By Strauss" and dancing with the fat barmaid and an ancient, but cheerful lady bystander. Jerry has fun playing with the neighbourhood kids with the song "I Got Rhythm;" the kids seem genuinely amused. Georges Guétary belts out a flashy Follies Bergére type song called "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise", while the egotistical Adam daydreams of triumph as a concert pianist performing "Concerto in F for Piano and Orchestra. " Jerry and Lise's key romantic tune is "Our Love is Here to Stay. " `An American in Paris' is a beloved title and many fans appreciate its artistry. Most of the other top M-G-M musicals display a broader streak of comedy, and the supposed 'best musical of all time 'Singin' in the Rain' is wittier, more complex and even has relevance as an account of Hollywood history. Oscar Levant's forced cynicism plays against the mood, as the show never makes a full statement about artistic vagabonds. The sentiment and heart in Paris is really a fusion between the personalities and the music. Leslie Caron's perky smile and laugh are winning but she seems truly heartbroken only when backed by Gershwin. It's less a variety musical than a romantic fusion. Gene Kelly's performance in the big `An American in Paris Ballet' integrates dance and music so closely together that he seems to personify the spirit of George Gershwin. Busby Berkeley and to some extent Michael Powell's big dance extravaganzas made the camera an active participant in the flow of music and dance, but Kelly's choreography unites music, dance camera and performance into a seemingly living entity. Add to that John Alton's intense colour lighting (with difficult, choreographed lighting changes) and the Ballet may be the most complicated dance ever put on film. It's an almost perfect collaboration. Vincente Minnelli's spectacular design motifs here are in much better balance. The ballet progresses through a parade of classic painting styles that mimic artists like Utrillo, Renoir and Van Gogh. Perhaps the best compliment for the Ballet is that it does full justice to George Gershwin. The music stands alone as a supremely emotional experience, and the Ballet only heightens it. There's none of the oddball mismatches of music and visuals that one remembers from certain segments in Fantasia. `An American in Paris' is Hollywood filmmaking worthy of superlatives. Blu-ray Video Quality – The video quality on this Blu-ray release is in a full 1080p encoded image in the 1. 33:1 aspect ratio. The first thing that will catch your eye with this release obviously, is that residual 1950′s Technicolor looks. Perhaps it was the intention, but I do have to say at several points in the film the colour palette goes from harsh to seriously intense, not by any means "popping" off the screen in a pleasing manner. Now, don't get me wrong, scenes doused in neutrals from the wardrobe to the set design actually look very nice, though there is still the subject of the flesh tones existent. The flesh tones harbour the most blush-esque of bright orange hues, and this look continues through the entire film, fluctuating in that Technicolor way you've seen on other elder classics, as an actor moves across the screen passing the horizontal flickers all shades of the palette alternate in tones. The blaring colour palette is heightened by the definite solid black level; so solid, some scenes in which actors are clothed in an abundance of black actually gives them an appearance of animation. This solid black level may be dead on, but it tends to bring out the hard-core saturation, which is often bleeding with more bold hues, creating a near glare at the presence of such vividness, and more importantly, taking away the presence of detail. The late Gene Kelly had an extremely expressive face, and though it needs to be understood that this film has endured some aging, much of the detail of facial features is absent; this quality also applies to all other visual definition aspects of the film, from the costumes, to the set design as well. A good example of this is at the runtime of about 32 minutes and 20 seconds, where Milo is wearing an open back dress, and the scene involves some shots from behind her. Where we would normally see the contours of the shoulder blades, the bleeding/pixilation and harsh colour saturation make the visible flesh tone of her back appear as one smooth piece. Overall, you have to give credit where it is due, and it is evident that this release is what it is with special efforts, as are most classic catalogue titles that have made their way to Blu-ray recently. Keep in mind that when you see this film on Blu-ray what you are seeing was created by filmmakers over 50 years ago, and through so many different processes, this will be the best presentation you can own at this time. Purists will also surely be proud, as this release hasn't gone through significant changes, still possessing many qualities that will keep it in a very original form. Though, when comparing a film from this era to others of the genre that have made their way to Blu-ray. Blu-ray Audio Quality – The audio quality on this release is presented in 1. 0 Dolby Digital Mono. It was a great choice on behalf of Warner Bros. to stick with the original mono track for this films Blu-ray release, providing a more sincere, and realistic experience connecting to a time long past, not to mention the film's content that is present would have made for a label of "overkill" if a more voluminous track had been included. There are just a few issues that occur on this audio track though. Occasionally, there is hissing present, usually during a pause in a musical number. Also, at least 2 to 3 times during the abundance of tap dancing that occurs throughout the film, the sounds of "tapping" are out of sync with what we see happening visually. On a more positive note, all of the vocals are carried out nicely, and shouts and emphasized vocals have a bit of an acoustic quality. Overall, this audio track suits the film in a justifying manner. The nature of the commentary makes for an uneven listen, but the enormity of the interviews on hand allows for the participants to cover the gamut of the production and for the disc's producers to be selective about the quality of all the information therein. Special Feature: American Masters: Gene Kelly: Anatomy of a Dancer [2002] [89:00] This PBS documentary from the American Masters series focuses on Gene Kelly, his career, and his contributions to the film and its genre. It looks in detail at the life, the work, and the contributions of Gene Kelly to movies and movie making. The film celebrates Kelly's putting story-telling into dance and discovering, along with Martha Graham and Jerome Robbins, an American style. It examines his partnership with Stanley Dolan, his bringing of tap and ballet into musicals, his marriages and personal competitiveness, his political views, and his work on stage as well as in film. This production details his contributions as a dancer, choreographer, and director. The narration and talking heads also discuss his muscular style, his low centre of gravity, and his masculine appeal. Special Feature: Vintage James FitzPatrick Traveltalks Short: Paris on Parade [9:00] A vintage musical segment from James FitzPatrick Traveltalks that focuses on a 1937 The Paris Exhibition. The Paris Exposition is seen as one of the most important events to take place in 1937 if only because it brought together forty-four nations side-by-side in goodwill. The Expo took place along the banks of the Seine, using many existing landmarks. Each national pavilion was provided and designed by the country in question, symbolizing some important aspect of that country. Pavilions of French colonies were also well represented. Lighter fare at the Expo included demonstrations of water skiing on the Seine, performances of cultural dances native to specific countries, and the on-going spectacle of the Fountain of Peace located at the base of the Eiffel Tower. Special Feature: Classic Cartoon: Symphony in Slang [1951] [7:00] `Symphony in Slang' is a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon short directed by Tex Avery and written by Rich Hogan. It tells the story of a man John Brown, who finds himself at the Pearly Gates explaining the story of his life to a bewildered Saint Peter and Noah Webster using slang of that era. The majority of the short is made up of sight gags based on Peter and Webster's imagined, literal understandings of such phrases as "I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth" and "Outside it was raining cats and dogs. " Special Feature: Love Walked In [1951] [3:00] A musical outtake song sequence featuring Georges Guétary and Oscar Levant. Special Feature: Audio-only bonuses: Outtake songs gallery and Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron and Johnny Green radio promos [14:00] A trio of interviews with Gene Kelly, Johnny Green, and a conversational chat with Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. Theatrical Trailer [1951] [4:00] [1080p] Finally, one of the high points of the M-G-M musical, `An American in Paris' makes a welcome entry into the annals of high definition in this marvellous looking Blu-ray release with a host of bonuses that make the package a must-see and for many a must-own. Warner Brothers used their patented ultra-resolution process to bring this film back to life. That means they went back to the original 3 strip Technicolor negatives and realigned them digitally. As a result, the colour and detail is unlike anything we have seen before on home video. In the dance number, where Leslie Caron takes on different personalities using different dances and colours, you will not believe the quality of colour. It really was amazingly, absolutely beautiful. If you have a Blu-ray player, make sure to choose this Blu-ray version of this film as you will experience something truly special and that is why it has gone pride of place in my ever increasing Gene Kelly Blu-ray Collection. Wasn't part of this piece played in a United Airlines commercial. An american in paris amc. Is there another version of this video? Incredible music! How Bernstein kept all the different plots going in his head-just amazing. Performed this four times in one week (as a chorister) back in 1979 or 1980: once on the campus of the University of Hartford (Hartt School of Music, where I was an undergrad choral ed, student) once at UConn (whose choir we were working with) and twice with the Hartford Symphony (and UConn Chorus and the Hartt Concert Choir) as part of a Beethoven festival. I have a love/hate relationship with it. It gives me a rush, especially the end, especially when the audience is really into it and is already standing and cheering as the last note fades away. But Beethoven was crazy and demanded impossible things from his chorus- at least if you sing it four times in a week.

An american in paris apartment scene. An american in paris piano. Roes are red Violets are blue When I listen to Tchaikovsky My neighbors do too. I swear I heard this in a Burger King commercial once. Makes me think of bustling 1920s New York City. I cry. Every. Single Time. I wouldn't call "An American in Paris" one of the most overrated movies of all time since there seems to be a general consensus about this status. But it is certainly one of the most dated. On every single level it is so outrageously dated that you the year of release isn't even a alibi.
First of all, there's something a little dishonest about the title; the film teases our expectations by using Paris in the title but apart from some obligatory establishing shots, Paris isn't remotely present in the story. "Casablanca" could get away with it because the idea of the oriental city mattered more than the real setting but in the flashback sequences, they did their best to show Paris in the background, because you just can't cheat with Paris. Besides, can you imagine "West Side Story" shot indoors? Can you imagine a matte with drawn hills in "The Sound of Music" Even the sound of Gerschwin fails to make Paris alive.
The film is also dated by Gene Kelly (and Stanley Donen) s "Singin' in the Rain, the movie that should have won the Best picture of 1952, if "High Noon" hadn't get it. We're talking of the greatest, funniest and most iconic musicals of cinematic history a quite a leap from 1951. Sure, Vincente Minelli didn't intend to pull any laughs from the viewers, but while watching the film, I kept wondering which scene he really intended to make an ever lasting impact. "I Got Rhythm" where Gene Kelly makes some great moves in front of admiring kids is one of the few I can still remember and the whimsical tone used when he strolls down the street. Neither of them involves the romance.
Indeed, the film is also dated by the standards of romances, you can't make a picture in Paris and not have the city play an integral part to it. In 1953, Roman Holiday" was one of the first productions set in a foreign places setting the precedent where the local flavor enhances the passion between the protagonists. "An American in Paris" doesn't even allow us a small immersion in Paris, and apart from a few "bonjour" and "ça va" the film could have been set anywhere. I just saw recently the movie "Fanny" and at least, you could have a direct taste on the Marseilles waterfront. You can't cheat with Marseilles, you just can't cheat with Paris. "The Aristocats" felt more Parisian than this.
Finally, there's no need to go till 1961, 1953 or 1952, Vincente Minelli's Best Picture winner is outdated by its Best Picture co-nominees, over the movie that changed the face of acting, winning three Oscars on that category, Elia Kazan's "A Streetcar Named Desire" and the no less groundbreaking "A Place in the Sun" I don't even know if it's even the best-looking Picture of the three, even "Quo Vadis" looked gorgeous and Peter Ustinov stole the show as the complex and tormented Nero. "An American in Paris" is a glorious and lavish anachronism only highlighted by Gene Kelly's contagious smile, great performance (yes) and Leslie Caro who does her best.
Caron would get more interesting roles in the future, but it's clear that her frail lovability was exploited at the expenses of a real chemistry with Kelly, I could feel why he fell in love but not that she could love him back. The film itself is based on a rather bland love triangle whose only spices are the interactions between Kelly and Nina Foch, despite a few high spots, some musical numbers fell flat. The film was a gigantic ballet put on screen, there's never a moment where they try to transcend the barriers and make something new and fresh. Even the musical sequences feel like fillers to the plot, the climax of the story is an excuse for music just when the romantic triangle started to be interesting, Singin' in the Rain" had the same problem but it was in the middle of the film and here, it wasn't a plot that called for such digression, by the time it ends, you really stop caring about the characters. Especially when the young starlet is obviously too shy and utters English words that don't match her thick accent and when the friendliest person with Jerry gets the harshest treatment.
This was the first musical to win after 15 years (the last one was "The Great Ziegfeld" so I wonder if nostalgia wasn't part of it, and that it marked the rebirth of Hollywood, the victory of Cecil B. De Mille's "Greatest Show on Earth" deepened the shift between the Academy and the new dispositions of Cinema in the 50's, but again, they didn't even nominate "Singin' in the Rain" so I'm probably missing something.
I said I wouldn't call "An American in Paris" overrated, well, I'm having second thoughts now.

He is discovered by wealthy Milo Roberts (Nina Foch), who becomes Jerry's patroness in more ways than one. Meanwhile, Jerry plays hookey on this setup by romancing waif-like Lise Bouvier (Leslie Caron) -- who, unbeknownst to him, is the object of the affections of his close friend Henri (Georges Guetary), a popular nightclub performer. (The film was supposed to make Guetary into "the New Chevalier. " It didn't. ) The thinnish plot is held together by the superlative production numbers and by the recycling of several vintage George Gershwin tunes, including "I Got Rhythm, " "'S Wonderful, " and "Our Love Is Here to Stay. " Highlights include Guetary's rendition of "Stairway to Paradise"; Oscar Levant's fantasy of conducting and performing Gershwin's "Concerto in F" (Levant also appears as every member of the orchestra); and the closing 17-minute "American in Paris" ballet, in which Kelly and Caron dance before lavish backgrounds based on the works of famed French artists. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Rating: G Genre: Directed By: Written By: In Theaters: Oct 4, 1951 wide On Disc/Streaming: Apr 27, 1999 Runtime: 115 minutes Studio: MGM Cast Critic Reviews for An American in Paris Audience Reviews for An American in Paris An American in Paris Quotes Movie & TV guides.

Movies | ‘Saint Frances’ Review: What (Some) Women Want A floundering waitress realigns her thinking when she becomes the caregiver to a lively six-year-old. Credit... Oscilloscope Saint Frances Directed by Alex Thompson Comedy, Drama 1h 46m Vaginal bleeding plays a potent supporting role in Alex Thompson’s “Saint Frances, ” unsurprising in a movie this deeply invested in the everyday joys and agonies of being a woman. Covering one difficult, transformative summer in the life of a dissatisfied waitress named Bridget (played by the film’s writer, Kelly O’Sullivan), the movie gently queries our assumptions about what constitutes female success. At 34, Bridget worries that time is running out on finding a career, landing a life partner and, especially, having children. She’s not sure she wants these things, she just knows she’s expected to want them. Her parents hint darkly about her aging uterus, and her younger, more relaxed lover (Max Lipchitz) wonders why she refuses to define their connection as a relationship. Then, almost simultaneously, she makes a momentous life decision and is hired by a mixed-race lesbian couple (Charin Alvarez and Lily Mojekwu) as a nanny to Frances (Ramona Edith-Williams), their precocious six-year-old. Initially a rather inept caregiver, Bridget gradually warms to her lively charge and her stressed-out employers. More important, she begins to make peace with herself. With a warm heart and a nonjudgmental mind, “Saint Frances” weaves abortion, same-sex parenting and postpartum depression into a narrative bursting with positivity and acceptance. Some scenes can feel forced and even a little hectoring (as when a breastfeeding mother is verbally attacked in a public park). Others, though, are so modestly insightful — and the performers so appealingly natural — that we forgive the occasional heavy hand. Bridget’s bond with the family feels organic and restorative, the movie making the argument that family is wherever you find it. And if Bridget still lacks direction, it could be because she no longer needs one. Saint Frances Not rated. Running time: 1 hour 46 minutes.

The rise of media streaming has caused the downfall of many DVD rental companies such as Blockbuster. In July 2015 an article from the New York Times published an article about Netflix’s DVD services. It stated that Netflix is continuing their DVD services with 5. 3 million subscribers, which is a significant drop from the previous year. On the other hand, their streaming services have 65 million members. In a March 2016 study assessing the “Impact of Movie Streaming over traditional DVD Movie Rental” it was found that respondents do not purchase DVD movies nearly as much anymore, if ever, as streaming has taken over the market. Watch Movie SAINT FRANCIS, viewers did not find movie quality to be significantly different between DVD and online streaming. Issues that respondents believed needed improvement with movie streaming included functions of fast forwarding or rewinding, as well as search functions. The article highlights that the quality of movie streaming as an industry will only increase in time, as advertising revenue continues to soar on a yearly basis throughout the industry, providing incentive for quality content production. ✵Watch SAINT FRANCIS 2020 Movie Online Blu-ray or Bluray rips are encoded directly from the Blu-ray disc to 1080p or 720p (depending on disc source), and use the x264 codec. Seberg (Benedict Andrews) is an affair drama which is an interpretation of a real story. Combining the lead character's professional and personal roles, it explores her personal and relational lives.
Kristen Stewart gives a slightly contrite performance and she seems to have been once again typecast. Thankfully, the supporting cast are there with good performances to make up for the lack of personal connection with the main character. Unfortunately the excellent costume design is not enough to carry the film and will likely be overlooked.
Speaking after a screening at TIFF, the director explained the film is really a story of voyeurism; the addiction and danger of the watcher and watched. Even so, the excitement of surveillance is lost on an emotional contrived performance.

A lot of people will watch this film and be annoyed that the plot is quite thin and a couple of major story beats get dropped. What ever happened to Jerry's first art show? Likewise, the various love stories are done in such short hand that I can understand why someone would not connect to them. But for me this really works because I think the film is trying to give an impression of a romantic Paris locale and a mere flavor of everyday life. The film in its story is very much like an impressionist painting. It has big brush strokes that give an outline and shape but is lacking in detail.
I think this style really comes across in an early scene in which Adam is trying to guess how Lise is and you see a fantasy (I think) of Adam that changes based on the description offered. The modern Lise is a flapper, the shy Lise is dressed in yellow with flowers etc. This scene is not only enjoyable but it really sets the tone of the film in that what follows are impressions, fancies and inklings of romance, movement and Parisian life.
The music is of course wonderful. Kelly is of course wonderful and can really dance. But the parts of the film that stay with you are the colors, the melancholy feelings and perfect invocations of amour. Those final 17-minutes are among the best ever filmed and they completely capture a couple in love. They also capture a city. They also capture the style of the film. They also capture the great movement of art history.
This is the Gold Standard for 1950's Musicals.

With satisfaction from just the beginning and end, I bought the movie, also because of me being a big fan of Gene Kelly) and was not disappointed. The absolute best part of the movie is the "American in Paris" 18 minutes dance which Gene Kelly is at his best. The plot is cute and charming as well are the actors, Jerry Mulligan' Gene Kelly and 'Henri'Georges Guétary. Leslie Caron also gives a great first movie performance.
Another part in the movie, which is also rather long, is the part where Oscar Levent(the struggling pianist) performs his concert in a daydream. George Gershwin, who supplied most if not all the music, and him create great music, meaning a great soundtrack.
A wonderfully entertaining classic film that everyone should see. 10/10.

The musical genre does not exist exists only Gene Kelly

What amazing style, Gene will always be my absolute favorite. My second favorite piece of music. Still have it on the opposite side of Rapsody In Blue, my favorite piece. First heard them both at a children's concert while a 4th or 5th grader. Dad bought it per my begging as one of his monthly Columbia Record Club selection. Now 70 y.o. and still have the LP and all the memories it conjures up - the concert, the Columbia monthly selection notice, my begging my dad, the day the album was delivered, like it was filmed and it's playing on the screen in front of me.
