I cannot believe the sound of the choir at the start and at the end… (and the sound and confidence of Sam in comparison to the end). Brought a tear to my eye, both when they were singing at the Royal Albert Hall, and when the husbands came home safely and one boy ran up to his dad shouting ‘Daddy! ’. An eye-opening programme. We are thinking okay we shall grab what we need and be out in half an hour. HAHA. Today was pay day, and it seems like every single wife was is there. Shoving carts, grabbing the last of what ever it was, I went to grab some ground beef their wasn’t any even left. Every wife looking down their list. Others with their calculators budgeting ( i’m assuming). No one looking at where they are going. Not to mention the check out lines. Starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan, the film tells the story of a group of wives and girlfriends of servicemen who come together to form a choir as a support mechanism to help them get through missing loved ones fighting abroad. Just like the characters, Sheryl, 51, also formed a choir six years ago when she was posted to Staffordshire with her husband, Dave – Flight Lieutenant Godwin in the RAF. She had already belonged to a choir when they were based at RAF Benson so, eager to make new friends and provide a group that the women could find solace in through singing, Sheryl set about establishing a choir. Within six weeks, they were up and running. Kristin and Sharon (centre) in a singing scene from Military Wives ‘I went to a coffee morning and asked if people would be interested, ’ recalls Sheryl. ‘Around a dozen girls said they would be interested and within weeks, we were practising. I love it! 'Singing in a choir is such a great way of forming friends and the support network is incredible. They know what you are going through. ’ Through singing, a lot of opportunities have also opened themselves up. ‘At Christmas, I featured as part of Channel 5’s Celebrity Carols At Christmas special and then the chance came up to sing with other members of the Military Wives Choir on the film soundtrack. ’ Sheryl recorded the song We Are Family at RAF Cosford in the summer of last year. There were three choirs in total. But it was no big fancy Hollywood production – they were all squeezed into a tiny room together with a sound man and then asked to sing by their musical director. It only took about an hour or so to get it right, and Sheryl didn’t feel nervous. ‘It was OK because no one would be able to see me, just to hear me, ’ she explains. Always at the back of your mind is the knowledge that it is dangerous. And even though we tried to keep things normal in our phone calls when Dave was away, we both knew deep down that at any moment, a rocket could launch and all hell could break loose. ’ Sheryl first met Dave, who was already in the RAF, at the age of 19 after a mutual friend introduced them. She was living in Staffordshire at the time while he was in Lincolnshire. ‘I went to visit my friend, where Dave was living, ’ she recalls. ‘Straight away, I fancied him! 'We played ping-pong for a bit and then one Saturday night I asked him what he wanted from the relationship – and that was it. I knew I was going to marry him. 'He was in the RAF so being apart has always been normal. We would meet up at weekends and he worked on the Red Arrows in the early days. ’ Four years later, the couple got married and were posted to RAF Scampton. It was Sheryl’s first encounter living at a military base. Sheryl Goodwin and her husband Dave on their wedding day ‘It did feel a bit weird at first but Dave had a nice network of friends and I started chatting to their partners, ’ she explains. ‘And so my experience was positive. 'The thing about the military is you form really full-on friendships. ’ Embracing military life wholeheartedly, in 1993 Sheryl moved with Dave to MOD St Athan in South Wales, where they spent the next 18 years. ‘We had two sons, now 18 and 11, while living in Wales and Dave was present at both births, as he was at home more in the early days. I was working as a marketing manager but after our second son, I decided to switch to my original path of being a PA so I could fit things around the children. ’ In 2011, the family were posted to RAF Benson before moving to RAF Stafford in 2013. By now, he had become a logistics officer, which took him away – once to Cyprus and twice to Afghanistan – for deployments that lasted anything from three to six months. Sheryl refused to let the fear of what could happen to him abroad ever get the better of her. ‘The mind-set of being a military wife means you have to accept this is their job and make the most of it. I simply used to tell myself, “He is gone, ” and keep to a routine. Having a routine is critical. ’ Yet while Sheryl learned to accept the situation, she admits it wasn’t always easy, adding, ‘You could find yourself feeling lonely, especially with Christmases, birthdays, anniversaries and Valentine’s Day because it makes it all the more poignant if they aren’t there. ’ Her two boys also found it tough at times. Recalling one particularly anxious conversation she had with her youngest when Dave was in Cyprus, she says, ‘He was sitting in the car and said, “Mummy, I don’t want Daddy to die. ” I asked him, “Why do you think he is going to die? ” He replied, “Because he has gone away again. ” I explained people go on holidays to Cyprus but I didn’t tell him Dave was probably in one of the most dangerous places.
