Al lirismo le sientan mal la reiteración y la grandilocuencia porque lo que acecha ahí al lado son la autocomplacencia y el empacho. Quizá por ello, paradojas de la vida artística, a Terrence Malick le han venido siempre bien las pausas. De demasiado tiempo, decíamos entonces sus fanáticos, hasta 20 años entre Días del cielo y La delgada línea roja. Sin embargo, cuando el estadounidense logró salir de sus largos retiros y se puso a hacer cine con la habitualidad de otros, cinco largometrajes entre la obra maestra El árbol de la vida (2011) y esta Vida oculta (2019) que hoy se estrena, se le acabaron viendo los hilos artísticos, las metáforas y hasta las cadencias. Quizá sea imposible ser sublime a tiempo completo. VIDA OCULTA Dirección: Terrence Malick. Intérpretes: August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Franz Rogowski, Karl Markovics. Género: drama. EE UU, 2019. Aun así, Vidas ocultas supone una cierta recuperación de la emoción tras la (a ratos) ridícula To the Wonder y el fracaso (casi) unánime de crítica de Knight of Cups (2015) y Song to Song (2017), que ni siquiera llegaron a los cines españoles. Esta vez el remilgo visual y textual del último Malick viene de la mano de un tema mayor y de unos subtextos interesantísimos, que entroncan bien con la magnífica La delgada línea roja, lo que deja en pie, al menos, a la excelente primera hora y cuarto de metraje, de las innecesarias tres horas finales. En la odisea personal y social del campesino austriaco al que le atropelló la guerra, el nazismo y la Historia, con mayúsculas, objetor de la ideología del odio en un tiempo de rencor y de ovejas en el rebaño, hay temas de enorme complejidad que Malick capta a través de sus habituales paisajes físico y humano, el de la naturaleza y el de los rostros. Son las certezas de un mártir sin nombre, uno de esos olvidados que, como bien se ocupa de explicitar el relato, nunca trascendieron pero permitieron poner las bases de nuestras sociedades actuales. Son los retazos de felicidad y verdad entre la poesía, las carreras, los juegos y los llantos de los niños. Es la dignidad en las miradas de un hombre y una mujer que se quieren. Son las humillaciones de la masa resentida. En la segunda y tercera partes del relato, la de la cárcel y la del juicio, sin embargo, el postrero cine demasiado peripuesto de Malick no atraviesa. Porque la sistemática hace tiempo que carga, siempre la misma, con tres esencias: las tomas con steadycam y la utilización de los grandes angulares; la constante voz en off y la narración de corte lírico, y la utilización de músicas clásicas entre la belleza de la imagen. El fantástico director de Malas tierras no necesita otra pausa, pero quizá sí renovar un tanto su estilo, porque demasiadas imágenes de sus últimas películas parecen intercambiables.

Malick's swirling shaky camera verite never really appealed to me. The only movie of his I liked was The New World. He wouldn't have to ask me twice! Or once. I'd just tell him yes. It looks really good. A must see. I hope this is as amazing as A Thin Red Line. I love this director's style. This has The Village vibes with the music. As it turns out, if Terrence Malick is working from at least some semblance of a script or firm story, he can do some pretty good things!
A Hidden Life is an intimate, spiritual epic that can mostly stand alongside Scorsese's Silence as far as films from this decade that are somewhat punishing but immensely rewarding for the (dont laugh) fulfillment they do for one's soul and sense of what our place is in a world that has beliefs and allegiances. This is as mesmerizing as anything Malick has ever directed, and when the poetry of it all clicks it's him firing on all of his cylinders, and in this case it is about a person's moral position and (see if this sounds is familiar) not pledging allegiance to tyranny and oppression, while at the same time connecting it to how one's mind connects to memory and to the natural world.
The one downside, at least on a first viewing, is that it runs too long, and there needed to be an editor or two with more gumption to say that just five or ten minutes could be lost (like, we get it after the first ten minutes of prison suffering, do we need ten more? All this said, it packs a wallop on equal intellectual and emotional ground, and while I may criticize the length I can't overlook how stunning many of the transitions and match cuts do their work to create connections and bonds between this man and wife and with the mountains and water and sea. More often than not this touches one as a lyrical and as a dark existential fable, with a commanding performance from August Diehl at its center.
Frankly, I think this film should be made more available than Disney - nay Fox Searcglight - has been doing, whether by their lack of support or lack of "bankable" talent. Id even go as far as to say if it was there in more rural parts of the U.S., where some young or even older person might wander in and be affected by the themes of standing up to the worst in humanity (even if, especially if, it may cost all.
