It is this humanist outlook that tags it to Victor Hugo, rather than the story that has little to do with the novel of the same name.
The suspense is riveting to the end, all the more that we don't know exactly where the movie is going. There are loads of short appearances by little-known actors that leave you wondering whether they are are actually acting a part or playing their own role. The action scenes are realistic and original.

H μουσική και οι στίχοι είναι των Alain Boublil και Claude-Michel Schonberg όπως και η σκηνοθεσία έχει ανατεθεί στον βραβευμένο Tom Hooper για το “The King’s Speech”. Οι ηθοποιοί που πρωταγωνιστούν στην ταινία αποτελούν την αφρόκρεμα της σημερινής εποχής Hugh Jackman στο ρόλο του Jean Vaijean, ο Russell Crow ως Javert, η Anne Hathaway ενσαρκώνοντας την Fantine και η Helena Bonham-Carter αναλαμβάνοντας την Madame Thenardier. Ειδικά για την συγκεκριμένη ταινία οι ηθοποιοί που τραγουδούν θα αποτελέσουν μια ευχάριστη έκπληξη. Η Helena Bonham Carter έχει επιτυχημένη προϋπηρεσία στα musical πρωταγωνιστώντας στο Sweeney Todd: The Demonic Barber of Fleet Street. Η Anne Hathaway έχει σπουδάσει κλασικό τραγούδι και το αποδεικνύει σε κάθε της ευκαιρία όπως στην απονομή των Oscar το 2009 τραγουδώντας μαζί με τον συμπρωταγωνιστής της Hugh Jackman. Η πλειονότητα των ηθοποιών έχει άριστες φωνές αν και ο Russell Crow δεν μας έχει συνηθίσει να χρησιμοποιεί τις φωνητικές του χορδές τοιουτοτρόπως.
